What is Positive Psychology?

gratitude 14
According to the UK website, Positive Pyschology. Org. uk,  Positive psychology is described as a:   'Science of positive aspects of human life, such as happiness, well-being and flourishing'.

The founder of Positive Psychology, Martin Seligam describes it as:

‘the scientific study of optimal human functioning [that] aims to discover and promote the factors that allow individuals and communities to thrive'

Positive Psychology looks at the 'here and now' and what is possible now or in the future.  With a shift away from more traditional counselling reflecting on the past and the reasons for problems, people are encouraged to look at their strengths and achievements and focus on their future possibilities.

How can it help us?

A positive perspective shows that concentrating on things that work well in life can bring about real change in our lives whether it be modelling others or using one particular part of our own life and applying it to other areas where we are looking for improvements.

Martin Seligam points to research which has shown that positive psychology produces happier people who show more productive, healthier and longer lives.

Using what Seligam refers to as ‘signature strengths’ in our working and social lives, will help us achieve a good and meaningful life.

How do we find out what our signature strengths are?

Why not visit the Martin Seligman’s website Authentic Happiness? : http://www.authentichappiness

The home page states that:

"Positive psychology is the scientific study of what enables individuals and communities to thrive."

You can try out the Authentic happiness Testing Centre on this site– there are lots of surveys and questionnaires  – you will need to register first but there is no cost.

Positive psychology is very effective when used in conjunction with other techniques such as NLP, meditation, visualisation and the use of daily affirmations.
